September 18, 2017, Atlanta, Georgia – Hurricane Irma was reported to be the strongest Atlantic hurricane on record and its effect was widespread, even moving through the State of Georgia. For the second time within the past eleven months, Southeastrans was called on by the Georgia Emergency Management Association Homeland Security to be a paratransit provider helping with the evacuation of coastal Georgia’s vulnerable population.
In October of 2016 during Hurricane Matthew, Southeastrans played a major role in being the sole NEMT Broker stationed at GEMA headquarters to provide wheelchair and stretcher-enabled transportation management services to the same base of members. In September of 2017 during Hurricane Irma, Southeastrans transported 50 members in evacuation efforts from areas in Savannah, Brunswick, Kingsland, and St. Mary’s to safe locations in metro Atlanta and North Georgia. 39 ambulatory, wheelchair, and stretcher-enabled members were safely returned to their home facilities ten days after evacuation.
